99k for Canines March 2025

I’m taking part in the 99K For Canines with Dogs Trust Ireland!

I’m taking part in the 99K For Canines with Dogs Trust Ireland!

I'll be taking on a challenge of walking 99 kilometres in a month to help stray and abandoned dogs and puppies. Every euro raised gives the gift of a second chance to our furry friends in Dogs Trust Ireland's care - thank you for your support!

The aim of Dogs Trust Ireland is to give stray and abandoned dogs a second chance at a brighter future with responsible, caring new owners. Since opening their Rehoming Centre in 2009, they have rescued and rehomed over 22,000 dogs. They rely on public support to fund their work and they are entirely reliant on the generosity of amazing people to continue our life-saving work. Every single donation raised provides each dog that comes into their care with nutritious food, veterinary treatment, a microchip, vaccinations and most importantly, love and cuddles from their canine carers and a forever home.

Day 31

Monday 31st Mar

Monday 31 March 2025. This is the last day of fundraising for the March 99K Challenge for Dogs Trust. We completed the 99K by Day 17, and funds continued to come in up to today where we have raised almost €700.00. To celebrate we did a little lap of honour around some of our favourite stomping grounds. Well, and to add a little colour to the final day, I did contemplate the ‘Bathing Costume Optional Notice’ as you can see from my photo, but on reflection decided there was enough with the strip tides and cold water, so I quickly chickened out... Next, we went up the cat's ladder and I met loads of friendly people and had to say Hi to EVERY-BODY... we played ball on the Burma with some other K9’s and with the extra hour we came home really, really late, it was still very bright, Oh happy days.

Now as we pass on the torch, it is Good Luck to all of you April 99K challengers, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did Woof, Woof, Love from me Sava and of course my Side Kick.

Day 19

Wednesday 19th Mar
I am done! 99K+++, where's my certificate?...

Day 17

Tuesday 18th Mar

March 17, 2025. It is 09.00hrs on day 17 and we have already completed 84.5K of our 99K walk for Dogs Trust. We have to date raised €540.00 with some more to come so, today we are joining the Aware group on their St Patrick’s Day walk from Howth Harbour to Dun Laoghaire Harbour. We don’t know how far we can walk, but we have all registered, ME(Sava), Rosa( 'yer one'), and our good friend Linda, we hope to complete the deficit of our 99k walk before dusk. There are no early morning trains with the bank holiday so our starting time will be 10.30 from Howth....

... Hours Later. Wow! what a day, the weather was dull and mild when we started off, so it was perfect for walking, and we kept a good pace as we crossed by Howth junction and onto the North strand. There was plenty of grassy areas for me and all the other K9’s to take advantage of as we admired the views across the North Bull.  Everybody was in good spirits and the intermittent cool breeze kept us from overheating. At some point along the Strand Road by Clontarf 'yer one's' heels started to blister, and we had to add padding to her boots, this really surprised her, she said, as we had for weeks walked much further without any problems however, onwards we marched and arrived at the Dublin Port Hooley at 1.20pm to a great atmosphere of lively music, refreshments, delicious sandwiches, face painting and an abundance of volunteers to guide us.

By 1.50 we were ready to set off again and headed down towards the Eastlink Bridge, the breeze had become quite sharp by now and we were glad to be heading out past Ringsend and onto Sandymount Strand. I (Sava) had another great canter around the fields here and when we reached the beach, we thought it might be a good idea to walk barefoot on the sand, She was in so much pain she found it hard to separate her feet from the ground, yet supposedly had plenty of energy and wasn’t one bit tired!  Sadly, an hour after leaving the Port she had to succumb to her injury and call it a day. Me (Mr. Rubber man) and Linda were still good to go, so it was a pity that we could not continue, and we are extremely disappointed for that.

Well over 99K is walked, well over €540 is sponsored, and in the process, we have also donated €100 to Aware through registration, and I have a special T shirt for my other, other, Mommie Patricia. We have loved every minute of this journey and fundraising for Dogs Trust. For that we are not disappointed.

Day 16

Tuesday 18th Mar
March 16, 2025. This afternoon was a quick one around the old haunt again. Taking the Dalkey Ave. route we decided to approach the hill from the Flags, this is a passage I had not been on for many years, and it was lovely to see the panel donated by the Dalkey Tidy Towns with its photos and brief historical piece on the function of the Metals and Flags. At the top we passed the Locky’s old Shebeen again, onto Ardbrugh and over past Torca Cottage the once residence of George Bernard Shaw. Back to Burma via the Green Road where Sava the ever-capricious pilgrim, was suddenly amongst his four newfound friends conducting a throw and fetch game at the edge of the woods, night was approaching so down by the old Quarry, onto the Barnhill Metals and back to Bulloch via Castle Park.  Duration 90 minutes, 4.5K

Day 15

Tuesday 18th Mar
March 15, 2025. Today was a No walk Day, well at least not together, it is Saturday and Monsieur Cosmopolitan is off hobnobbing in Dunlaoghaire, exhibiting his very salubrious St Patrick's Day Cravat and parading the boards like The Emperor in his new clothes. Then, sipping coffee in the People's Park with his other Mommie Pat who was looking radiant and relaxed after her recent holiday abroad, sure there wasn’t a second glance for the plebs left on the pier as he took off from 0 to 60mph. Even his fabulous, indestructible, gift from Hong Kong lay abandoned by the gate of the BBC (bockety blue cottage).

Day 14

Friday 14th Mar
March 14, 2025. Another local sprint around town today. All roads lead to Rome, they say! well here it’s all roads lead to Dalkey Hill, and each day we try to travel at least a few new streets that we have not already covered. So today after Leslie Ave we took Rockfort Ave, Ardeevin Road, Knocknacree Road and  Ardbrugh Road the home of the old Sheebeen and former residence of Sava’s Great grandfather Locky. Of course, Sava had to pose outside the watering house and then it was up the old Funicular line to the Quarry. It appears to be true that the Billy goats gruff have moved to this side of the hill although we did not see any tonight. Back down onto the Burton Road, Dalkey Ave, Village Gate, Whites Villas, and Church Road. The most amazing orange moon was appearing as we descended by the church, and of course the Town hall was flying the Flag for our upcoming National holiday (even after dusk!)  4.8K

Day 13

Thursday 13th Mar
March 13, 2025. Today is a No Walk Day, we have put in lots of steps but no designated route so it will not get added to our 99K goal. Anyhow my(Sava) other, other, mom Patricia is landing in Dublin today and I am so  impatient to see what lovely present she has brought me from her travels, I am climbing the walls and walking the ceilings with excitement. Hurry up Saturday!!! Meanwhile my real mom Dee is left exhausted with all the mayhem and training that makes me such a great dog to walk and their lives so much easier.

Day 12

Wednesday 12th Mar
March 12, 2025. Last minute walk to the East Pier from Bulloch Harbour via Sandycove and the Newtownsmith Promenade. You could see the debris on the site of the New Baths after the light Northeasterly! Wow, I am glad it wasn’t any stronger as there were some hefty stones thrown up from the seabed, but the sunset this evening cast a fabulous light on the bay and shortly after an almost full moon rising behind Roger Casement. The Pier was not busy and like Day 6 another 5.6K clocked up in just under 80 minutes. We enjoyed a good brisk walk to the lighthouse and got a few nice shots at dusk. As we arrived home Poncho Sal-Va was still hopping around like a Mexican jumping Bean...

Day 11

Tuesday 11th Mar

March 11, 2025. Today we walked from Bulloch Harbour up to Burma via Ulverton Road and Cardiac Hill, there was time for a few throws and fetch in the field before we took the Killiney hill path to the tearooms and exited here to enter Mullins hill. To our great surprise the Goats had already vacated and moved to greener fields. From here we wandered over to the Glenalua exit to take the pedestrian cuts down to Strathmore Road, (where of course we had to admire Paradise Garden), on to Vico Road with the bay looking fabulous, and Yer’ man at this point thought he might like to climb the Cats Ladder. no way! Mr. Duracell enough is enough for one day, down to Sorento, another Pedestrian cut through Victoria Road onto Colimore, Leslie Ave, and back to Bulloch. I am exhausted; he is still flinging squeaky bottles at us.... 7k according to world walking, I thought that we had walked way more.

Day 10

Monday 10th Mar
March 10, 2025. Back to Monday and Sava decided to repeat Day 3’s walk in Shanganagh Park. This time we went all the way to the beach there was a fair north-easterly blowing and the Waves were crashing in fast. After a short trudge through the pebbles, we went back up the path to the open field. A graveled lane runs around the perimeter leading you up to the orchard field, which then leads to another open field, the off-lead run, back over the bridge to the outer spaces, Playing fields and courts. This park just doesn’t stop giving, and although we like the uphill challenges, this one is perfect for strolling around. We spent just over an hour walking 3.5k but we had plenty of ball time where I think Sava must have clocked up 4 times what I did.

Day 9

Sunday 9th Mar
March 9, 2024. Glendalough today and the traffic and parking was mayhem, intending to follow the Green and white trail a12K hike was quickly abandoned with our late arrival, and a revised recce led us to stay on the easy routes Green twice and purple x once, with even time for a picnic before hitting the high road home again. 3 hours and 11K completed. Sava onlead for the whole journey was a pain for him with no chance to really ricochet around the park, but with vulnerable wildlife in abundance it was the right choice.

Day 8

Saturday 8th Mar
March 8, 2025. It is the Beginning of week two today, Sava and Ciaran set off for their weekend walk, minus his Saturday Mommie Pat who doesn’t actually return until Thursday (stupid humans getting their dates A about T). Anyhow we had to watch the Rugby so, we did not leave until nearly 4.30pm. Up Harbour Road, Leslie Ave, Colimore Road, Vico and down to EIRE on Hawk Cliff to commiserate with her on today's loss. Back up to The Vico and across to the Cats ladder, onto Torca Road, Green Road, Up the steps to Killiney Hill back down to Burma, Up Dalkey Hill, down to Torca Road and over to Gorse Hill Right of way, down to Knocknacree Road, up to the public access lane leading onto Knocknacree Park, down by the Railway, into the Town and back to Bulloch Harbour. Time 2.5 hrs distance 9.5K. Met tons of friendly K9’s and their two-legged Buddies, including our dear friend Lorna, Robbie and their little ball of wool, Finn. Sava the Springing Slinky never ceased to amaze everyone with his boundless energy...

Day 7

Friday 7th Mar
We are just coming to the end of our first week, we have completed 36.5K of our 99K challenge and we have raised a total of €530.00 Wow! we are delighted. As I said before the money is great for Dogs Trust, and any moral support is great to keep us motivated, it all counts.  Today was a washout as we did not manage to do any steps together, although we both got a lot of steps in separately. However, in the greater scheme of thing this is not allowed to count towards our 99K. Our goal was to do this together and  together we will do it. Sava had a great walk today with his uncles in Shanganagh Park before they set off on the high seas, and tomorrow he will join his Saturday Mommie for a great walk, Coffee by the Promenade in Dun Laoghaire, and Loads of love, attention, and admiration, (would you be able for him!). she will be just back from holidays so, I can imagine what that will be like.
We do intend to get some K's in tomorrow but it will only be after the Rugby, On Sunday for sure we will make up big time for our shortfall.

Day 6

Thursday 6th Mar
Opps!  Rushing out with such excitement Sava forgot to wear his Yellow Dogs Trust Bandana.  So, looking quite naked without it, he insisted on getting a nice mediterranean shot by the Oranges at Caviston’s Emporium in Glasthule. Out onto the seafront at Link Road for a quick ball game on the Green, a photo with Stone Man, and onto the New Baths where, there are no bath, on the site of the old Baths, and Roger Casement  is observing everything. Plenty of chats with other handsome K9’s and then on to the East Pier in the hope of dodging the rain before we reached the Red Lighthouse. Of course, we did and even made it back To Bulloch Harbour before a single drop touched us, actually, there was no rain at all this evening it fooled us! The Pier was not busy, so it made for pleasant walking, unfortunately there are still far too many peeps leaving behind their doggie Poops!  DISGRACFUL!! 5.6K start to finish. Happy Days for Our 99K goal.

Day 5

Wednesday 5th Mar
March 5, 2025. Gosh we are really pushing it to get a few K’s in today, so this is not going to be a good one. However, on deciding to do Mullins Hill this afternoon we were pleasantly surprised to encounter a handsome bunch of Billy Goats just inside the Clarmont entrance to the hill. Curious but a little coy they stared at us from behind their wooden pen, but didn’t run so I guess they are getting quite used to the people and their K9’s. Sava of course thought he was back on the farm and couldn’t take his eyes off these strange looking sheep. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and as we wandered around, we noticed a big clean-up was taking place, collections of blue bags were neatly stacked, and the goats were making good of clearing gorse and grass. We descended onto the Glenalua Road and admired the little hamlet of quaint cottages and some grand properties that led back up to the hill. Again, an abundance of daffodils was in full bloom which really brought the feeling of Spring to our short but enjoyable walk. Out for an hour, an easy walk but lucky if we got 3k in.

Day 4

Wednesday 5th Mar
March 4, 2025, Late update again!  Today Sava’s Dogs Trust Bandana finally arrived and oh boy he really looks the BizDusk was fast approaching when we arrived at the Burma so to complete our Bactrian Walk before nightfall, we took off on a quick step towards Killiney hill via the Tearooms pathway. Making our way up the first hump Sava met his friend Max and as we joined them, I tried to scathe past the summit, but Max’s dad noticeably said No! You're not at the top until you touch the obelisk, dragging my two lead balloons I touched the knobbly surface on the almost 300-year-old structure and Sava, only warming up at this point sprang around like Zebedee at bedtime, Boing, Boing, Boing. On the descent I regained my energy, and we were at the bottom in less than 5 minutes. Back up the second hump of Dalkey hill I staggered my way slowly as Sava eagerly led the way. At the top Max headed of down the side path to the Quarry, and we continued by the tower down to Torca Road where we hooked back up with our new walking mates. At the steps on the Green Road, Sava and Max led the way down to the Vico where we walked back to Strawberry hill and up the Cat’s Ladder climbing the 238-step accent up to Torca. It was a bit like the Magic Roundabout today as we circled back along the first route again! Boing, Boing, Boing! Only 4k reached today.

Day 3

Monday 3rd Mar
March 3, 2025. Day 3. Today was not as energetic or, as extensive, as our weekend walks, but it was exciting as we discovered a new route through the fabulous  Shanganagh Park. We set off from Tilly’s Cafe and Treats by the graveyard parking. The crocus and daffodils were in full bloom and neatly cut lawns and pitches surrounded by tar-mac pathways meandered through the woods and led walkers around a variety of choice areas including the Native Orchard collection, and over the bridge to the beach. Unfortunately, we could not complete the 4.5k walk there today but really look forward to returning within the week. We ended our day back up on Dalkey hill with a brisk walk to the top and back around through the Green Road. Of course, Sava insisted on a throw and fetch ball game before returning home. Distance covered today by our Grasshopper was 4.5k.

Day 2

Sunday 2nd Mar
March 2, 2025. Day 2 at 15.08hrs we left Bulloch Harbour and headed  towards Dun Laoghaire via the costal path through Sandycove and onto the promenade. The seafront was buzzing with Sunday walkers, dogs, Prams, and children devouring Teddy's ice-cream. The weekend market was open in the Peoples Park, and The East Pier was so packed that we decided on the quieter option of a trip to the West Pier. Sava thought he might like to join the Gerbola Circus, as they were warming up for the evening Show, but reluctantly settled for a walk to the green Lighthouse, and some banter with the local K9's. We returned to Bulloch along the same route as dusk  approached and the maddening crowds dissipated. Our total journey was 9.9km. Even after all that he is still bounding around like a kangaroo...

Day 1

Sunday 2nd Mar
March 1, 2025 15.00hrs Sava set off on his 99k journey  for Dogs Trust from Dalkey via Tubbermore, and Sorrento road. At Vico we descended the steps onto White Rock beach and walked along the shore to Shanganagh Cliffs. it took us 80 minutes to arrive there, so with enough light we walked back to Dalkey via the same route. The killer for me was ascending the steps at white rock, I was beat, but Sava was still bouncing like a Gazelle looking forward to tomorrows walk. We completed 9.5k on our first day.
